Mount Rainier Muir Attempt - Reached 8,300' - Rain Out
On this trip, our friend Lauren Soulis from Dallas joined to climbfrom Paradise to Camp Muir. We ran into a bit of a storm by the time we reached 8,200' so turned back, but Lauren would return in September 2007 for the Rainier921.com team to ascend Mount Rainier.

Not sure what we would encounter on the descent if we continued through the storm, we opted to turn back and hike another day.

We broke for lunch at Pebble Creek.

Mount Rainier Day Hike

After we completed our day hike, found Ash's ring, and caught our breath, we stopped into Copper Creek Inn for Blackberry Pie a la mode, a big burger, soup, and hot chocolate. Copper Creek is a neat little stop on your way in/out of Mount Rainier National Park that we highly recommend for dining. They also make picnic baskets if you wish to have something when going into the park. A Ranger in the park said we should not leave without taking a plunge into the blackberry pie and he was right! Try it out!
So, Ash's parents have this tradition of picking up a rock on any trip they go on. Then, they write the date and location on the rock and add it to their pile which they keep next to their fireplace. We did not want to copy their tradition - a rock is too small. So, Christina wanted a boulder. And not just any boulder, but one handpicked from the river bed.
Like a window shopper, she pointed to a nice big one and sent Ash on his way. There is something about these rocks - they are extremely dense. The one Christina picked was in excess of 150 pounds. This is where the fun began.
In an effort not to gouge his wedding ring, Ash handed his ring to Christina to hold. Long after the grunting of maneuvering this BOULDER to the back of the SUV, after Ash nearly passed out from breathing too heavy, after we nearly put a hole in the floorboard of the SUV, Ash asked for his ring back. Christina reached into her pocket and it was not there. Panic mode.
For the next fifteen minutes, we crawled on hands and knees along the river bed, the roadway, and only after Christina tore the car apart did she find it - it had fallen out of her pocket and into the back seat when she jumped in the car! The rock is now named "Ring Rock" and has a new home in her parent's garden. We will have "CHRISTINASH" etched into it eventually to commemorate our first time at the mountain. We are preparing for our Mount Rainier Summit in September 2007. You can find out more at www.Rainier921.com.
That's all folks! ...almost.
Yes, that is a lodge. Click on the below picture to see the snow readings. The trails were 10 feet deep in snow. We did not have the properly recommended snow shoes so that made our hike quite interesting.... "Christina! Christina! I'm sinking!!!"

The majority of this snow will be melted by mid June which cause all area rivers to rise. Rafting time!

Mount Rainier - 14,410 feet - we are bound and determined to conquer it! www.Rainier921.com
We stopped on a snow field just above "Paradise" which is where climbers convene to summit the more than 14,000 peak.

November 2006 was the worst rainstorm and flooding that Mount Rainier has seen in over 100 years. It wiped out thousands of trees, camp grounds, roads, bridges, and even rerouted rivers. When the waters receded, rock beds strewn with whole trees were all over the park.
Bambi was not too bothered by our passing by as she ate dinner.

This is the Nisqually entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. Numerous roads are expected to be closed for the next year as roads are repaired from the November 2006 flooding.
Mount Rainier is literally 6 left turns around from our house - about 45 minutes through winding roads. This is one of many lakes we pass on the way.
